  • Guardrail, ladder and stepover systems delivered as one package
  • Installation coordinated within an operational healthcare environment
  • Permanent infrastructure supporting safer future roof maintenance

Scope / Background

Select Access was appointed to install a coordinated package of roof-access and height-safety infrastructure at Wexford General Hospital. The works included freestanding guardrail, aluminium access ladders and stepovers, addressing several stages of the route used by authorised personnel carrying out roof-level inspection and maintenance. As the project took place within an operational healthcare setting, the solution required careful coordination with the hospital’s existing access arrangements and site protocols. The objective was to create safer, more clearly defined movement between roof areas while providing collective protection at exposed locations and across obstacles encountered along the access route.

Process

The installation was completed by trained Select Access engineers working from approved technical drawings and manufacturer instructions. Freestanding guardrail sections were assembled using counterweighted frames and installed in accordance with EN 14122-3:2016. Ladder locations, fixing brackets, clearances and exit arrangements were checked before installation to EN 14122-4:2016. Bespoke stepovers were then assembled beside the relevant roof-level obstructions, with platforms, access steps and handrails aligned and secured to create stable crossing points. MEWPs, controlled work zones and agreed access routes were used to manage the works safely within the live hospital environment.

Results

The completed package provides a joined-up route for personnel who need to access and move across the hospital’s roof areas. The combination of permanent ladders, stepovers and freestanding guardrail addresses access, movement and edge protection as one coordinated requirement. This makes future inspection and maintenance activities more straightforward while reducing reliance on temporary or improvised access arrangements. On completion, system fixings and dimensions were checked against the approved design, and the installation was photographed and documented for handover. The project demonstrates Select Access’s ability to deliver multiple complementary systems within a complex, operational healthcare facility.
