Case Study: Design, Supply, Installation, and commissioning of guardrail and ladder systems for Lidl

Introduction

Select Access, a leading company in Ireland specialising in bespoke proven work-at-height safety and access systems played a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of work-at-height personnel at two Lidl Distribution Centres (RDC) in Newbridge and Mullingar.

In 2019, we collaborated with renowned construction main contractors John Paul Construction for the Lidl RDC Newbridge and Sisk for the Mullingar Lidl RDC project, undertaking the design, installation, and commissioning of over one thousand linear meters of freestanding guardrail and over 20 bespoke caged ladder systems at each location.

Client and Projects Overview

Newbridge

John Paul Construction selected Select Access to implement height safety and access systems at the Lidl Region Distribution Centre (RDC) in Newbridge from the tender stage due to our technical proposals for the large industrial unit.

Mullingar

Sisk, the prominent main contractor, selected Select Access to execute a similar project at the Lidl Distribution Centre in Mullingar. The difference is that the Mullingar distribution hub was a renovated warehouse, requiring a high level of technical expertise to provide comprehensive height safety and access systems to fit with the refurbished structure.

Scope of Work

Installation of over one thousand linear meters of non-penetrative guardrail at each location and the design of over 20 bespoke ladder systems, ranging from 2-14 metres in height, for safe access and egress to roof level.

The ladder systems were designed to fit different elevations and sections of the warehouse with some ladders required to only be two metres in height. Other sections of the building required ladders to run along the full elevation, hence why Select Access were engaged to provide a bespoke design of 14 metres in height.

Newbridge Project

Timeline: Three months

The project was completed on time and in-budget showcasing Select Access’s commitment to ensuring project efficiency. Given the speed of the build from the main contractor (ten-month program), Select Access accelerated design and installation, completing the work in three months.

Our team designed and installed over 2,850 linear metres of non-penetrative freestanding guardrail system on this project. There were 27 ladders installed on the project made bespoke to the building specification.

Select Access’ technical design team designed the ladder solution and worked closely with our suppliers to manufacture the one-of-a-kind solution. Once manufactured, all ladders were installed on site within three weeks.

Mullingar Project

Timeline: Twelve Months

Similar to the Newbridge project, the Mullingar project adhered to the timeline outlined by Sisk, proving streamlined project management.

This retrofit project for Lidl in Mullingar required a similar scope of work, with Select Access installing 1,100 linear metres of non-penetrative free-standing guardrail on the project to protect work-at-height personnel.

Select Access, designed, installed, and commissioned twelve bespoke ladder systems for this project. These ladders also ranged from two to fourteen metres in height to allow safe access and egress from the roof.

From Design to Manufacture 

Select Access has partnerships with leading manufacturers of work-at-height safety systems. For our ladder and guardrail systems, we have been in partnership with both suppliers of Guardrail and Caged Ladder systems for over 5 years.

Our in-house team designs unique guardrail and ladder systems, collaborating with our European partner for manufacturing and timely project delivery. Designers and installers implement guardrails under standards EN ISO 14122-4:2016.

The Select Access design team coordinates our design drawing and layouts with the design team drawings, architects, engineers and any other specialist subcontractors such as cladding specialists.

We identify the correct location for installation, determine correct levels for platforms, and ensure that any required structural support is supplied by the main contractor. This allows Select Access to provide a “right first time”, collaborative approach to installation.

Non-Penetrative Guardrail Systems

Designing the guardrail system involves marking up the roof drawings that outline the level of protection required under EN14122:2016 standards.

The Select Access design team coordinates design drawing and layouts with the design team drawings, architects, engineers and any other specialist subcontractors. Mechanical and Electrical and Roofing contractor are often engaged at this point.

This ensures we highlight any clashes with AOVs, Access Hatches, Cable Containment and Ducting. This minimises the revision of drawings allowing a faster timeline for approval of drawings from the design team to ensure we meet site programme dates for installation.

Once installed, the non-penetrative free-standing guardrail system provides collective protection for all end users without the requirement for additional training.

Projects Handover Results

Select Access’ systems provide maintenance technicians with enhanced safety on location while carrying out routine checks at roof levels. The caged ladder systems allow safe access and egress to the roof for all required personnel.

The handover process trained users, shared documentation, and included compliance certificates for installed components and commissioning.
